The Future Platforms products are all made bespoke and often require a lot of technical and business know-how to make them work to the highest standard.
Robert Wiltshire is a Solution Architect at Future Platforms, and is always busy working across different projects to ensure that they seamlessly solve common user problems, function well, and are easy and enjoyable to use by our businesses and their clients.
What do you do at Future Platforms and what is your favourite part about your role?
I am a Solution Architect at Future Platforms. My responsibility is to design solutions to complex problems and simplify them where possible. In my role, I communicate and work with the development and project teams to define the best solution, which satisfies the needs of the stakeholders and end-users.
The client and stakeholder interaction is an area of my role I find most interesting as I get to learn about different business requirements and translate them into exciting technical solutions.
Tell us a bit about your journey and how you got here:
I grew up in a little village close to Southampton, went through my education interested in technology and computing, then went onto study Computer Science at university.
After completing my university degree, I moved to London to build myself a career in the capital where I saw the biggest and best companies were based.
I started freelancing in London building .NET websites for my landlord and local businesses, and studying the technology in my spare time.
I then accepted a job in South London as a Junior .NET Developer and after a number of years’ service, seeing where the market was headed, I helped transform the company into a mobile development agency by learning iOS application development and a host of new languages and software along with it.
A few years passed and then came the time where I felt I had outgrown my role and was ready to move up with my career. That’s when I accepted an exciting role in Central London with Future Platforms – leading a team of iOS developers on the Domino’s Pizza project. The Domino’s project was an incredible challenge for me but together with the team, we made it a huge success both in the way that the project was run and the success that the product has had on the market.
My most recent development was being promoted to a Solutions Architect, where I am able to use my experience as a developer, team leader and client communication to scope, research, and define the best solutions to some incredible challenges.
What projects are you most excited to work on and why?
Big projects, which cover multiple technology stacks, layers, and data providers. Anything that requires a non-typical three-tier setup is interesting to me and breaks me out of my comfort zone. Projects that include inherent software and hardware constraints offer exciting challenges to solve.
What/who inspires you?
Elon Musk – he continues to push the boundaries with technology and science, and isn’t afraid to do any of it or be told he is wrong in the process. A true entrepreneur and visionary of our time.
Finally, what would your superpower be?
To be able to explore the expanse of the universe in an instant, unharmed.
Rob has a deep technical understanding that can only come from many years of hands-on development experience and qualification as a Solution Architect. He excels at communicating ideas to non-technical stakeholders and is always willing to help whenever required.Ben Strawson, Technical Director – Future Platforms
